Pharmacy

for piano
Program:
This piece is based on the 1992 installation by visual artist Damien Hirst, Pharmacy. In the Hirst installation, he builds an entire pharmacy store within an art gallery, complete with shelves stocked with fictional drugs and vials of unknown liquids. By using the colors and symbols one would normally associate with a pharmacy, the viewer is momentarily transported away from the art gallery into a space that is at once new and quite familiar. The same effect is achieved in this piece by taking familiar harmonies and motives and transforming them in unfamiliar ways.
